I have often said that it would be worth learning French only for the reason of being able to read French poetry, of which Alfred de Musset is one of the many towering geniuses. There is also a wonderful book about him and his spiritual struggles called Le Mal du Ciel which I highly recommend.
Selected Lines for the French song
One way to compose a song simply to open a book of good poetry and start singing the words on any chord progression. This is how the song Espoir en Dieu was written, simply by selecting blocks from the very long poem by the same name written by De Musset. The chosen lines were:
Tant que mon faible cœur, encor plein de jeunesse,
A ses illusions n’aura pas dit adieu,
Je voudrais m’en tenir à l’antique sagesse
Qui du sobre Épicure a fait un demi-dieu.
